One moonlit evening around the midnight hour ~ sitting quietly on the bank of the Rio Grande ~ enjoying a beautiful full moon and the soothing sound of the river rippling through Santa Elena Canyon ~ I heard a light rustling in the brush from the Mexico side of the river ~ the brush parted and a donkey carrying two young vaqueros riding double stepped into the river and started toward the Texas side where I was watching in surprise ~ as yet unnoticed by any of the three. About midway one of the young men suddenly glanced in my direction as though he knew they were being observed ~ he looked startled ~ and no doubt so did I! But then ~ feeling no sense of threat from these two young vaqueros ~ I offered a smile along with a blessing, "Via Con Dios" ~ as their donkey stepped out of the river onto the Texas side of the border ~ and still smiling ~ and watching ~ as they rode away on their late night journey of adventure ~ I knew that someday I would paint this piece titled "Moonlight Border Crossing" ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Mexican Folk Art Painting,Paintings,RoMy,Original Artwork,Southwest,Big Bend,Texas Artist

Hola ~ from "Where Rainbows Wait for Rain" ~ in Big Bend, Texas on the banks of the Rio Grande ~ along the border of Old Mexico

I hope everyone is having a wonderful morning ~ here in the desert country of Big Bend this day is off to a gorgeous start ~ crisp & cool before it warms up to the high nineties later today!  Wherever you might be this morning I wish you a great one!

And here is the next entry from Peter Koch's 1945 Diary of the Big Bend National Park in Texas (to read this diary from the start please refer to my blog post of September 3, 2009):

Sunday
April 15

Had an invitation from Cal Miller Supt. of Platte National Park - Oklahoma to visit with them, and picture the Park -

Went toward the window and photographed the children on horses and burro.

On way down saw the pair of ant woodpeckers near the nest tree - I believe they have completed the nest.

The nest in cholla is still unoccupied and though the cactus wren cries an alarm every time I get near the place no eggs have been laid that I could find - in any nest -

We still hear the oriole every day - morning and evening seems like he will have his nest above our trailer although just as often he is heard below - the flycatcher is feeding young in the storeroom since last Wednesday - April 11th.

"A State of Mind"~Church~MeXiCaN FoLk ArT~RoMy Painting

Hola ~ from "Where Rainbows Wait for Rain" ~ and yesterday we did have a nice afternoon rain ~ I haven't checked my rain gauge as yet, however, to verify the amount ~ but it gave all the desert critters a nice refreshing drink! And what fabulous cooler weather we've been having here in the Big Bend! Days in the mid-90's and evenings in the 70's! I just love it!

"A State of Mind"~Church~MeXiCaN FoLk ArT~RoMy Painting

Here is the next entry from photographer/lecturer Peter Koch's 1945 Diary from the Big Bend National Park, Texas (and if you're just joining the reading of this diary please refer back to the post of September 3, 2009)

April 11th

Spent most of the day working on the boat and watching the orioles.

In the evening we went to Dr. Maxwells home and after cocktails and meeting with the visitors - the director - and later joined the entire group at a dinner -

The first news of Pres. Franklin Roosevelt came in on short wave and the sudden death was a shock to all.

During the evening I had a chance to discuss the making of a picture for the Park - Drury agreed on the essentials - and a discussion of the details will no doubt follow.

We listened to Newton Drury address the Park directors and following that we went to trailer to discuss the many events - of the past two days.

End of this diary post for this day

And please while you are here take a moment to view my latest painting titled "A State of Mind" which is presently available on ebay.

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Springs

Hola ~ I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! If you are spending it here in the Big Bend National Park area I know you are enjoying our weather so cool these past few days ~ and scattered with rains! This is one of my favourite times of the year here in Big Bend ~ when Fall is on the wake of Summer. After a chili-pepper hot summer these days are a like a Dairy Queen Icecream Treat!

Here is the next entry in Peter's Diary (and please refer to September 3, 2009 post if you'd like to read it from the start as well as an explanation back of it)

1945 Diary Entry by Peter Koch

Sat March 31 -

Cloudy - Rain
Hail

Rain began early this a.m. - and continued thruout the day - intermittant rain - hail. In a very short time the ground was soggy and the loose rocks began shifting when walked upon - the dust that has been so heavy during the last few days finally settled and now the scenery is once again clear and bright -

End of this day's diary post.

I've finished my painting of Santa Elena Canyon with the vaqueros crossing the Rio Grande ~ and will try and post a photo of it later today or tomorrow ~ please check back if you'd like to see it!

Have fun today!! RoMy

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Spring

Hola ~ I am nearly finished with my painting of Santa Elena Canyon and the vaqueros crossing the Rio Grande & hope to have photos of it maybe early this week ~

What spectacular weather we have been blessed with here in the Big Bend National Park area! Nights cool enough to sleep with open windows ~ no air conditioning! I just love it!! And the moon last night ~ shining across the desert ~ magnifico! This morning the coyotes singing outside my window woke me from a sound sleep ~ ~ ~

Here's the next entry from Peter's diary (to read from the start of this diary please see September 3, 2009)

Friday, March 30th

Saw the first hummingbird today, as it protested my entering a canyon we call the Cathedral. I was however unable to identify this bird because of the rapid flight and my own precarious balance on the talus slope.

The trip, made for the purpose of seeing if any eggs had been laid in the nest under a rock at a point half way up the "figures" of the "novitiates" - resulted in finding no eggs. The nest seemed more complete however as though it has been used - Saw only one hawk and it seemed in no way excited - Three vultures circled overhead and except that they circled as vultures will - there was no indication that any seemed concerned about my presence - the only one worried at all was the canyon wren that once more broadcast his alarm and then tossed it lightly aside by "running the scales" so light and airy as usual.

There are some excellent agaves starting to bloom - the show should be a spetacular one - due to a concentration of bloomstalks in certain desirable areas.

End of the day's diary entry.

Hope you enjoyed your time here & please stop by for more of Peter's diary tomorrow ~ before leaving please take a moment to visit my newest artwork on ebay! And have a great day! RoMy

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Spring

Hola ~ Another gorgeous morning here in the Big Bend National Park area ~ on the Rio Grande ~ a great place to be! The rains came again yesterday ~ in the late afternoon I took a break from painting and hiked in the rain to the mesa top ~ the sun was shining ~ the rain was light and gentle ~ and an awesome rainbow covered the sky from north to south ~ I knew I should have carried my camera!!

This morning is sweet and cool after the rain showers and all the desert critters are refreshed and happy!

~ ~ ~ and here is the next entry in the 1945 Diary of Peter Koch from his time spent in the Big Bend National Park:

Thursday March 29

Went to the window prospecting for scenes in which to film the kids on horseback.

Down at the lower end near the junction raised a pair of white winged doves.

Several deer are in there and one agave is up about half way with its bloom stalk.

Found, near the place where a tree is blown down the nest of a woodpecker being cut out of a tree. Looks like soft wood of some kind. Was unable to identify the bird but his dark bill was entirely surrounded by white and then a black area thru the eye and over the head - an odd clownish effect.

Returned and at 4 p.m. filmed the growth of an agave. That is I started on it. Must get several more.

End of this day's diary post

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Spring

Hola ~ from "Where Rainbows Wait for Rain" ~

The rainbows had rain yesterday evening! Only a smattering here at mi casa ~ but every evening just before dark I hike to the top of a mesa on the back side of our property where we neighbor the Big Bend National Park ~ and I could see the rain ~ looked like a good one ~ up in the high country where the Lodge is ~ and the clouds white and thick draped over the Chisos (Ghost) Mountains ~ beautiful!

From top of the mesa I could see Rough Run Crik and it had quite a bit of water which also told me the higher country had gotten rain. Maybe today it'll rain here at mi casa!

And by the time I walked the trail back down the wind kicked up and the temperature dropped almost immediately ~ so cool that I had a few goosebumps!! ~

~~~ I am still working on my latest painting of Santa Elena Canyon in the moonlight and a couple of vaqueros crossing the Rio Grande ~ but it's not finished yet ~ I hope to have some photos of it in a few days ~
For those of you who are interested in reading with me from Peter Koch's 1945 Diary here is the next insert (and if you have just joined in and want to know what this diary is all about please read the post of September 3, 2009 ~ where you'll find explanation):
Century Plant Begun
Wednesday March 28th
Fair
Decided that a trip down to Hot Springs was in order as I could film the ocotilla, cactus and see the sunlight effect on the Del Carmens - We got started about noon and went down to Tornillo Creek in some rough arid section took a few feet of pictures. The Rosillos are in the background and show red against the yellow clay and gravel of the Creek foreground.
We went down the road and with frequent stops to photograph we did finally arrive at the Hot Springs dry - hungry. Ate our lunch on the creek - three killdee parading in the flags in front of us.
On our way back we made several stops but tonight the scenes lacked some of its beauty, so I did not make any more exposures.
The last of the Texas bluebonnet made a nice little scene in the valley of the Rio Grande.
Began filming the Agave - sequence of growth.
End of the diary's post for this day ~~~
The above photos are what was left of Peter Koch's darkroom, (many, many years after he penned this diary) when we bought this place. During the time that he wrote this diary in 1945 he and his familia lived in the Park.
When we bought this property ~ which had passed hands at least once since Peter lived here ~ this darkroom, unfortunately, had to be torn down ~ I hated losing a piece of history but the snakes had made a breeding ground of this building which was built right into the side of a hill. But inside were stacks of Arizona Highway magazines from the 1940's and 1950's ~ which I still have and so enjoy reading! And even though this piece of Peter's past is no longer in existence when I pass this area I smile as I picture him in there developing his film all those years ago!
To read more of his diary ~ please check back tomorrow & have a fabulous day! RoMy
Lots of beautiful colours in this charming piece of Mexican/Southwest Folk Art ~ the background is painted gold with a light green wash applied over it which gives it just a hint of a green overlay ~ which is how most everything in Old Mexico is painted, a wash over a wash of colours! This black-haired senorita is wearing a lovely turquoise blue dress and a pair of dangling, gold earrings too! She is really quite lovely!
This is a great piece of Mexican Folk Art that would add a charming touch of Old Mexico to anyone's casa (home) ~ or office workplace! And what a great opportunity this is for the right buyer to add to his or her collection of Mexican Folk Art! And what a perfect time to start a collection if you haven't already as Mexican Folk Art is quite popular now ~ and increasing in value with time.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This Mexican Folk Art painting is an ORIGINAL work of art, brightly painted with acrylics on a smooth, round piece of wood measuring 7" x 7" x 3/4". There is a hanger already attached to the back - when you receive this artwork all you need to do is place it in your special area and enjoy! Also, this piece has been finished with a non-yellowing acrylic varnish to protect and enhance its beauty for years to come.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The front of this painting is signed by the artist and the back is also signed, dated, and titled. By the way the artist "Romy" - that's me! I live on the border between Texas and Old Mexico ~ near the Big Bend National Park ~ a few miles from Terlingua Ghost Town ~ and I love the history and culture of this area ~ a raw, still quite primitive land ~ a desert land where "rainbows wait for rain." The last few photos in this description show my outdoor estudio ~ Terlingua Art Studio ~ which faces Santa Elena Canyon and the Rio Grande River, the natural border between Old Mexico and Texas ~ and it is from this primitive setting ~ 80 miles from town ~ that I find most of my inspiration for painting. (in the photos Mexico is on the left side of the river and Texas is on the right)
I enjoyed the visit ~ Gracias! And, please, while you are here take a moment to View My Other Items For Sale ~ Presently, I have several paintings (on canvas) and more than one RoMy ORIGINAL TINY TIN (TM) at auction ~ several of kitty cats with rabbits and baby dolls! BELIEVE-DREAM-TRUST Mexican Folk Art-RoMy Inspirational Artwork Original Painting Direct from Artist Terlingua Art Studio Near Big Bend National Park
This is my latest Mexican Folk Art painting which I just listed on eBay auction titled BELIEVE~DREAM~TRUST! I paint Mexican Folk Art (as well as lots of Southwest and Country Life Folk Art) because I particularly love the culture and tradition of Old Mexico and because I live along the border of Old Mexico and Texas I am surrounded by so much rich history (from both sides of the border!) that I naturally find myself painting what I live....
Also, much of what I paint tends to have an inspirational theme to it ~ a reminder to enjoy life such as it is ~ whatever it may be at the moment ~ while always believing what is can become better....
Anyway, this painting is an affirmation to never ever give up on your DREAMS!
Thanks for stopping by and please check out this painting by following this link! Gracias! RoMy
Saint Francis Mexican Retablo-Handpainted on Ceramic Tile-Wooden Display Stand-Mexican Folk Art-RoMy-Terlingua Art Studio
This is my latest Saint Francis Retablo - the Patron of Animals and Peace. I always love to paint this particular Saint - I enjoy using different animals in each painting - and most often I paint St. Francis on a piece of tin, sometimes on canvas, but this particular one is on a glazed ceramic tile. It comes with a wooden display stand - or you could bond him to a wall in your casa! This is a RoMy Original Tiny Tin (TM) - a great piece that will add a touch of Southwest Colour to your casa!
I have been painting these "tiny tins" for many years now and even though I use acrylic paints - painting on tin makes the acrylic more like watercolor! I love the feel of the paint slipping and sliding across the surface because it really allows me to paint with more flow and less control over my brush.
I also enjoy painting on canvas and enjoy doing large works of art - my latest have been on canvas 40"x32" -
I find the challenge of going from a tiny piece of tin to a huge piece of canvas where everything is on a much bigger scale (or vice versa) an opportunity to expand my abilities as an artist!
