MeXiCo SuNRiSe~Rooster~MeXiCaN FoLk ArT~RoMy Painting

Hola! Good to see you! Hope you are having as beautiful a morning as the folks in this little village I just finished painting ~ a little village in Old Mexico ~ this piece is titled "Mexico Sunrise" and it is available now on ebay ~ where you will also see lots more photos showing all the intricate detail!

And here is the next entry from Peter Koch's 1945 Diary of the Big Bend National Park (to read this diary from its start please refer back to my blog post of September 3, 2009)

April
Friday 13th

Went up to Laguna and from there to a point about three miles down to canyon of the boot springs. The total hile of twelve miles was pretty hard and my records for the trip include many blue throat hummers.

The last Sunday that I spent on Laguna we failed to see or hear a single one of the birds now there are 4 in a single group in the narrow gap before arriving at Laguna from the Basin.

Also recorded three wood peckers that looked spectacular in the dead limbs of a pine - black except for red spot on nape of head - wheat breast streaked with black and red on throat (of male?) with white ring around eye -

Identify as Anteating Mearns Woodpecker - found one next in lower Basin and another below Cabin at Laguna.

End of this day's diary entry

Please before leaving take a moment to visit me on ebay and see more photos of "Mexico Sunrise" ~ below is a description of this painting ~ and I hope everyone has a fabulous day ~ have FUN! RoMy

Here is the next entry in Peter Koch's 1945 Diary: (to read this diary from the start please refer to the post of September 3, 2009)

April 10th

Went down to the lower part of Camp and on from there to creek intersection - checked on my old nest locations and found my cactus wren still on nest.

The white winged dove of which I saw on 4 had moved down creek further and are now in vicinity of the Giant Dagger on trail. There were none noted in the little canyon or east side of Mt. Bailey.

On returning found - Drs. Schmidt, Taylor, Presnall, MacDougall, had returned from a trip into upper Mexico - across the Del Carmen area. Camping beside our trailer. We spent a very pleasant evening together and compared notes on snakes & bats.

End of Day's Diary Entry

Muchos Gracias for the visit ~ and have a FUN Day! RoMy

One moonlit evening around the midnight hour ~ sitting quietly on the bank of the Rio Grande ~ enjoying a beautiful full moon and the soothing sound of the river rippling through Santa Elena Canyon ~ I heard a light rustling in the brush from the Mexico side of the river ~ the brush parted and a donkey carrying two young vaqueros riding double stepped into the river and started toward the Texas side where I was watching in surprise ~ as yet unnoticed by any of the three. About midway one of the young men suddenly glanced in my direction as though he knew they were being observed ~ he looked startled ~ and no doubt so did I! But then ~ feeling no sense of threat from these two young vaqueros ~ I offered a smile along with a blessing, "Via Con Dios" ~ as their donkey stepped out of the river onto the Texas side of the border ~ and still smiling ~ and watching ~ as they rode away on their late night journey of adventure ~ I knew that someday I would paint this piece titled "Moonlight Border Crossing" ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Springs

Hola ~ I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend! If you are spending it here in the Big Bend National Park area I know you are enjoying our weather so cool these past few days ~ and scattered with rains! This is one of my favourite times of the year here in Big Bend ~ when Fall is on the wake of Summer. After a chili-pepper hot summer these days are a like a Dairy Queen Icecream Treat!

Here is the next entry in Peter's Diary (and please refer to September 3, 2009 post if you'd like to read it from the start as well as an explanation back of it)

1945 Diary Entry by Peter Koch

Sat March 31 -

Cloudy - Rain
Hail

Rain began early this a.m. - and continued thruout the day - intermittant rain - hail. In a very short time the ground was soggy and the loose rocks began shifting when walked upon - the dust that has been so heavy during the last few days finally settled and now the scenery is once again clear and bright -

End of this day's diary post.

I've finished my painting of Santa Elena Canyon with the vaqueros crossing the Rio Grande ~ and will try and post a photo of it later today or tomorrow ~ please check back if you'd like to see it!

Have fun today!! RoMy

1945 Diary Big Bend National Park Texas Mexican Folk Art RoMy,Paintings,Painting,Desert,Santa Elena Canyon,Photographer,Photography,Mexico,Hot Spring

Hola ~ from "Where Rainbows Wait for Rain" ~

The rainbows had rain yesterday evening! Only a smattering here at mi casa ~ but every evening just before dark I hike to the top of a mesa on the back side of our property where we neighbor the Big Bend National Park ~ and I could see the rain ~ looked like a good one ~ up in the high country where the Lodge is ~ and the clouds white and thick draped over the Chisos (Ghost) Mountains ~ beautiful!

From top of the mesa I could see Rough Run Crik and it had quite a bit of water which also told me the higher country had gotten rain. Maybe today it'll rain here at mi casa!

And by the time I walked the trail back down the wind kicked up and the temperature dropped almost immediately ~ so cool that I had a few goosebumps!! ~

~~~ I am still working on my latest painting of Santa Elena Canyon in the moonlight and a couple of vaqueros crossing the Rio Grande ~ but it's not finished yet ~ I hope to have some photos of it in a few days ~
For those of you who are interested in reading with me from Peter Koch's 1945 Diary here is the next insert (and if you have just joined in and want to know what this diary is all about please read the post of September 3, 2009 ~ where you'll find explanation):
Century Plant Begun
Wednesday March 28th
Fair
Decided that a trip down to Hot Springs was in order as I could film the ocotilla, cactus and see the sunlight effect on the Del Carmens - We got started about noon and went down to Tornillo Creek in some rough arid section took a few feet of pictures. The Rosillos are in the background and show red against the yellow clay and gravel of the Creek foreground.
We went down the road and with frequent stops to photograph we did finally arrive at the Hot Springs dry - hungry. Ate our lunch on the creek - three killdee parading in the flags in front of us.
On our way back we made several stops but tonight the scenes lacked some of its beauty, so I did not make any more exposures.
The last of the Texas bluebonnet made a nice little scene in the valley of the Rio Grande.
Began filming the Agave - sequence of growth.
End of the diary's post for this day ~~~
The above photos are what was left of Peter Koch's darkroom, (many, many years after he penned this diary) when we bought this place. During the time that he wrote this diary in 1945 he and his familia lived in the Park.
When we bought this property ~ which had passed hands at least once since Peter lived here ~ this darkroom, unfortunately, had to be torn down ~ I hated losing a piece of history but the snakes had made a breeding ground of this building which was built right into the side of a hill. But inside were stacks of Arizona Highway magazines from the 1940's and 1950's ~ which I still have and so enjoy reading! And even though this piece of Peter's past is no longer in existence when I pass this area I smile as I picture him in there developing his film all those years ago!
To read more of his diary ~ please check back tomorrow & have a fabulous day! RoMy
To view more photos or to purchase this collectible piece of Southwest Folk Art please follow the link above.
This is a RoMy Original Tiny Tin (TM) - a great piece that will add a touch of Southwest Colour to your casa!
I have been painting these "tiny tins" for many years now and even though I use acrylic paints - painting on tin makes the acrylic more like watercolor! I love the feel of the paint slipping and sliding across the surface because it really allows me to paint with more flow and less control over my brush.
I also enjoy painting on canvas and enjoy doing large works of art - my latest have been on canvas 40"x32" -
I find the challenge of going from a tiny piece of tin to a huge piece of canvas where everything is on a much bigger scale (or vice versa) an opportunity to expand my abilities as an artist!
